Our code of conduct requires that basic labour and human rights are met, and that environmental impacts are managed, when supplying MACVAD with goods and services. This expectation also applies to the production and garment treatment methods suppliers use during their manufacturing processes. Treating denim to make a garment look worn or faded is a common practice within the clothing industry, and one method that has been frequently used is sandblasting. We now know that sandblasting can be extremely damaging to workers’ health, due to the high risk of disease caused when workers inhale tiny particles of silica.
We ask our suppliers not to use the sandblasting method on any product supplied to MACVAD. Suppliers (and subcontractors) will be monitored and are required to provide us with assurances that this ban is being enforced.
The use of sandblasting in the manufacture or finishing of MACVAD products is prohibited.
